Porthos project may continue

news-details

The integration plan and the environmental permits for the so-called Porthos project will remain in effect. This means that the Porthos project can continue. This follows from a ruling by the Administrative Jurisdiction Division of the Council of State on 16 August 2023.

Porthos pleased with the Council of State's green light for CO2 storage

The first major project for CO2 transport and storage in the Netherlands can go ahead, now that the Council of State has given a positive opinion on the ecological assessment of the Porthos project. The Council of State concluded today that the ecological research has shown that the nitrogen deposition of Porthos has no significant effects on nearby nature reserves. The final investment decision is now being prepared by Porthos. The aim is to start construction in early 2024.

By storing CO2 in empty gas fields under the North Sea bed, large quantities of CO2 can be kept out of the atmosphere at relatively low cost in the short term. Thanks to Porthos, 2.5 million tons of CO2 per year will soon be captured and stored permanently. CO2 storage is therefore an essential measure for the industry to contribute to the Dutch climate objectives. At the same time, the industry is working on the transition to processes based on renewable energy and raw materials. The construction of the Porthos system will take approximately two years. Porthos is expected to be operational from 2026.
